Background of TPCRC
Due to remarkable actions in the field of Tobacco Control, in 1997 National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases have decided to establish Tobacco Control Unit. In 1998, Tobacco Control Unit extended its activities and for the first time Smoking Cessation Clinic was established with collaboration of Tehran Municipality.
In a period of 10 years, this Unit has had loads of Tobacco Control activities in the fields of research, education, treatment and prevention. Currently three major smoking cessation clinics are working under supervision of this unit in Tehran, and their methods have been used as a model for other smoking cessation clinics all around the country.
Given these activities and considering Shahid Beheshti University's confirmation, this unit has been changed into Tobacco Prevention and Control Research Center (TPCRC) since 2007.
The main objective of this Center is to provide a convenient ground in order to implement research projects and educational programs at public, basic and expert levels, through which we could release our main issue a "Smoke-Free Iran".
This center is partly supported by NGOs and goes hand in hand with Iranian Anti Tobacco Association (IATA) and Ministry of Health.
In 2007, this unit has received initial approval from Shahid Beheshti University to become a research center. Fortunately, the proposal was approved by Ministry of Health and Medical Education and the unit has become Tobacco Prevention and Control Research Center, since September 2007. TPCRC has made many efforts in different fields such as publishing books, writing articles, executing projects and participating in national and international meetings.
This center has been a member of FCA since 2001 and it has participated in INH5, INH6 and COP1, COP2. By participation in these meetings, TPCRC has gained loads of useful experience through which it can inform other cooperators and authorities about FCTC.
Our greatest aspiration is to prevent smoking in all forms and foster the development of healthier life-style.
