Some Views from the 2nd Workshop, 2008

Introduction

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic presents a major challenge to the control of tuberculosis (TB) at all levels both in high HIV prevalence countries and in countries with concentrated epidemics of HIV. Tuberculosis is also one of the most common causes of morbidity and one of the leading causes of mortality in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). In addition, there is a mutual interaction between M. tuberculosis and HIV. The immune suppression induced by HIV modifies the clinical presentation of TB and hence its management. On the other hand, TB influences the prognosis of HIV infection. Therefore addressing TB/HIV co-infection is a high priority in most settings.
World Health Organization has introduced the Interim policy on collaborative TB/HIV activities in 2004; however implementation of the policy has been lagging behind in many settings. To this end, organizing the third training workshop for TB and HIV Programs are of great importance, in order to identify and address the bottlenecks in planning and implementing integrated and collaborative TB/HIV activities.
