Tracheal disease research center:
There are a limited number of research centers for tracheal diseases in the world. Considering the experience and expertise of surgeons working in NRITLD, establishing the tracheal disease research center was set as a priority during the recent years. Thoracic surgery department of Masih Daneshvari Hospital as a referral center for patients with tracheal lesions provides a favorable resource for such researches in this center. The goals of this research center are as follows:
- To recognize common tracheal diseases, how to prevent them and their proper treatment
- To teach how to prevent post-intubation complications
- To perform basic cellular and genetic researches
- To perform researches in the field of tracheal transplantation
- To train subspecialty fellows in this field
- Collaboration with regional and international organizations
The head of the tracheal disease research center:
The head of the tracheal disease research center considered the establishment of TB research center as a positive action indicative of a growing experience in the field of lung transplant, tracheal transplant, tobacco control and prevention in this center.
Dr. Mojtaba Javaherzadeh mentioned the conduction of a series of primary researches on trachea as one of the goals of tracheal disease research center and stated that “…Teaching how to prevent tracheal diseases, consequent reduction in patients’ expenses and also conduction of research projects are of the other goals of this center…”. During the last 10 years, this center has been the only accredited referral center for patients with tracheal diseases. Considering the large number of patients and manuscripts written in this center, it is anticipated that this center will be one of the accredited centers in terms of education and prevention of tracheal diseases in the next 5 years both in the country and in the Middle East region. Also, specialists who are interested in the field of tracheal diseases can participate in the educational courses held by this center. The head of this center pointed out the conduction of accredited researches on diagnosis and treatment of tracheal diseases in this center and hoped that this center will one day be able to synthesize artificial trachea. TB research center was established in 1992 and in time has become the only center for heart and lung transplantation, treatment of tracheal complications and TB patients in Iran. At first this center was established by the efforts of 2-3 specialists but now several specialists are working in this center. Dr. Javaherzadeh also asked for help in financial and executive issues as well as human resources from the NRITLD.
Dr. Hamidreza Jabbari Darjani is a member of tracheal diseases research center. In his point of view, in-time diagnosis and treatment of tracheal diseases is the main positive point about this center. It is hoped that this center will become a large research center in near future. Dr. Jabbari stated that “…The first priority in this center is to recognize what the patient needs and then providing a proposal regarding the related diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by using available researches…”. He hoped to start performing advanced researches on animals in near future to find new therapeutic methods for treatment of tracheal complications.The important requirement to achieve this goal is the cooperation and collaboration between the researchers from different fields of science. Another issue is the equipments which should be available for research centers. The main goal of this center is to perform tracheal transplantation and synthesizing the natural trachea of the patients. Dr. Jabbari is invited to participate in the 2007 Chest seminar and he has 2 papers to present about a new method (endobronchial chemotherapy) for the treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung. These 2 articles have also been accepted for publication in the Journal of Bronchoscopy (JOB).
