National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NRITLD) was selected as WHO collaborative center for tobacco control simultaneous with 29th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution. This selection  has been valid from December 1 st  2007 for 4 years.
According to altter dated Dec.11th 2007 ( no.53/41/2 (IRA )H2141/13 ) from Dr. Hussein Geszairy, Head of WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, in addition to announcement of this selection, presenting an annual report and acting according to protocol of using logo and flag of WHO was requested from this institute.
It is noteworthy that this selection has occurred as the result of continuous efforts of Tobacco prevention and control research center during the past 8 years.
Tobacco prevention and control research center is responsible for implementing tobacco control programs of NRITLD .Also by performing research activities, presenting scientific papers, holding educational programs, and preparing various books , it has taken effective steps in tobacco control throughout the country.
This selection which was made considering previous activities, background, and experienced human resources in the field of tobacco control programs , clearly shows the outstanding position of Iran considering tobacco cessation among other countries in the region.
